Headless Horseman Guide

Check out my updated guide for WotLK Classic here!

The Hallow’s End holiday event received a big update in Burning Crusade, the addition of the Headless Horseman. He’s involved in a new daily quest outside of Stormwind and Orgrimmar. He is also found inside the Scarlet Monastery Graveyard as a holiday even boss fight, offering one of the most desired mounts in the game. This guide will go over the Headless Horseman encounter for Burning Crusade Classic, helping you get the most chances at new loot.

Hallow’s End is scheduled to run from October 18 through November 1, 2021. Giving you 15 days to farm the Headless Horseman.

New Hallow’s End Daily & Brooms | Headless Horseman Boss Fight

New Hallow’s End Daily & Brooms in Burning Crusade Classic

Chronologically in-game the first appearance of the Headless Horseman is above Horde and Alliance towns near capital cities.

Horde:

  • Razor Hill in Durotar
  • Brill in Tirisfal Glades
  • Southeast section of the Ruins of Silvermoon in Eversong Woods

Alliance:

  • Goldshire in Elwynn Forest
  • Kharanos in Dun Morogh
  • Azure Watch in Azuremyst Isle

He appears at regular intervals and sets the towns on fire. A daily quest called Stop the Fires is offered and players use buckets of water to put out the fires. If the fires are put out in time the Headless Horseman lands and can be engaged by everyone present. He is level 11 so one good hit from a level 70 player will end him.

He drops no loot at this stage, but when defeated a pumpkin with a daily quest is left behind. Anyone in the area can pick up the Smash the Pumpkin daily and turn it in for extra holiday treats and a chance at getting a broom mount.

Magic Brooms

Magic Broom

Magic Broom

The Magic Broom is a limited-time holiday mount.

  • Flies in Outland (provided you have flying trained) and ground only in Azeroth
  • Goes the speed of your highest riding skill
  • Bind on Use (tradable if not used)
  • Lasts for 14 days in real-time, enough for the holiday event
  • Each requires the appropriate level of riding skill to use

This is a change from what was available in the original TBC. Back then there were several different broom models, which worked with different riding levels. From a slow ground to a fast-flying model. Those brooms also offered instant cast. But TBC Classic is making use of the consolidated Magic Broom (w/o instant cast) added in WotLK.

Call the Headless Horseman in Burning Crusade Classic

Headless Horseman

Headless Horseman

The Headless Horseman is also found in Scarlet Monastery Graveyard as a holiday boss. His loot is of interest to many high-level players, including his flying mount. With a party of five, you should be able to kill and loot him up to five times a day until Hallow’s End is over.

The Stop the Fires daily above is a breadcrumb leading you to SM. Completing the fire fighting quest series offers you a bonus summons of the Headless Horseman, one time only. You can head straight to SM and engage the Headless Horseman as soon as Hallow’s End begins if you like. But within the holiday period complete the original quest series to get an extra summons in.

One Daily Summon Per Character

Similar to the Coren Direbrew fight during Brewfest, players can summon the Headless Horseman once per character per day. So a group of five players can get in five attempts. Anyone level 65+ can do the summoning daily.

If you complete the fire fighting quest series from Goldshire you can do two summons in a single reset, but only once.

During the original Burning Crusade, you could take a 10-man group to fight the Headless Horseman. The fight is easier and you can get in ten attempts with everyone summoning. But you’ll also have more than twice as many people to compete with for loot.

With the Brewfest boss this year we saw some players lie about having a summon available and leech off of groups; taking loot and denying the group a fifth attempt. If running a pug ask everyone if their summons is available. Kick anyone who dodges the question. If one does get through then add them to your ignore list and tell your friends and guildmates to do the same. In the many, many runs my guild did this was only reported once.

Getting to Scarlet Monastery Graveyard

You and your group will need to get to Scarlet Monastery (SM). The summoning stone there will not work for you, it only works on players levels 28-44. So everyone will need to travel on their own. Expect the trip and wait to be the longest part of this daily event, especially for Alliance players.

Alliance:

  1. From Shattrath City portal to Ironforge.
  2. Take a griffin to Chillwind Camp in Western Plaguelands.
  3. Ride north, cutting through the Ruins of Andorhall, and then head west into Tirisfal Glades.
  4. Take the second road on the right (or cut cross country) to then head north to SM.
  5. Once inside SM the Graveyard is the door on the far left. No key is required.

Horde:

  1. From Shattrath City portal to Undercity.
  2. Ride out the main gate and head northeast to SM.
  3. Once inside SM the Graveyard is the door on the far left. No key is required.

I expect warlock summoners will take advantage of the holiday and offer summoning services right to SM’s door. Check Trade and Looking For Group chat channels before you make the long haul to the dungeon if you have some gold to spare.

The Headless Horseman Fight in Burning Crusade Classic

The Headless Horseman fight in Scarlet Monastery Graveyard is in three phases. You’ll attack the boss to start and his head in the second half of each stage. The boss’ abilities will also change in each stage. Once you’ve seen the fight it becomes easy to repeat.

Call the Headless Horseman

Summoning Pumpkin for the Headless Horseman

Summoning Pumpkin for the Headless Horseman

  1. One person clicks on the pumpkin offering a daily quest, called Call the Headless Horseman. Anyone level 65+ can do this once per day.
  2. You’ll receive a Dreary Candle quest item. Use it by clicking on the pile of dirt just behind the pumpkin. The Headless Horseman will then fly out of the ground and circle for a few seconds before landing.

Phase 1

  • Tank and spank the boss
  • Melee DPS be sure to stay behind the boss, he has a cleave
  • When the boss’ health reaches 0 his head will come off and the boss will wander around causing damage
  • All DPS focus the head and ignore the body (including the tank)
  • Once the head has taken enough damage or time runs out it will return to the body

Phase 2

  • Same as Phase 1 plus…
  • The boss will throw pumpkins at a random target, causing damage over time to the target

Phase 3

  • Same as Phase 2 plus…
  • The boss will summon adds every 30 seconds. They drop from the sky and take several seconds to activate. When active they are non-elite.
  • Most groups should be able to focus the Horseman and then his head before the adds activate. If they do activate then have the tank round them up to protect the healer.
  • When the head comes off this time your goal is to finish it off, failure to kill it before time will result in a repeat of Phase 3 and you’ll be at risk of going out of mana.

There is no need to run out and reset the instance after each fight. Another member of your group simply does the summoning quest and you can repeat the fight when ready.

The Loot

The Headless Horseman will drop items among this list. Typically one epic item and possibly a blue item, too. Everyone in the group is eligible for the loot after each kill regardless of who did the summoning.

The Horseman’s Reins were originally added in Patch 2.3.0, just after the holiday event in 2007 (first year of TBC). So the mount was first available during the 2008 holiday. I expect the mount will be included in the Burning Crusade Classic version from the start.

Magic Brooms

The Headless Horseman can also drop the Magic Broom available for the duration of the holiday event.
